Sheryll Melinda's Story

What a life! After graduation, I headed to UGA along with a few others from our class (Zoe Ann Irvin, Tommy Poole, Edward Loudermilk, and Len Dalton). It was indeed a different world when my dorm held about twice as many girls as the entire student body at SHHS. It did, however, not take long to make new friends and feel at home in this new place. I fell in love with this school, cheering for the DAWGS, my sorority, and the guy who would become my hubby, Lynn Buckelew Hooven, It was a time when many of us witnessed changes in our lives and the world around us. The times changed on campus from girls being only allowed to wear dresses or skirts in class to wearing anything including your PJ's under a raincoat. I witnessed a change from a very conservative campus to one where students streaked across the green lawn of North Campus and protested the war and the murder of students at Kent State. It sometimes felt as if our generation was destined to see everything around turn upside down. By the end of my freshman year, I had selected Biology as my major, and there were hours spent in lectures and labs. There was still time on the weekends to enjoy all the fun in Athens. After meeting thanks to Tommy Poole, Lynn and I had four quarters to enjoy UGA together on campus before he graduated with a forestry degree in June of 1969. He was fortunately hired by the Georgia Forestry Commission and placed in the office in Newnan, GA. Unfortunately, in October he was one of the final groups of guys to be drafted into the Army. Two weeks later, the first lottery took place; he would have been number 305 for the draft had the letter not been delivered. He surprised me with an engagement ring on my birthday in November while we visited his parents in New Jersey before he reported for duty at Fort Knox in February. We were married on June 26, 1970, at First Baptist Church in Cornelia while Lynn was on a 3-day leave after completing his first AIT at Fort Belvoir in Alexandra, VA. We made our first home there until October when he was transferred to Fort Hood, Texas where he, fortunately, remained working as a cartographer until the Army began to rift individuals due to our decreased involvement in Vietnam in the spring of 1972. I had completed the last year of my degree by commuting back and forth between Fort Hood and UGA, alternating quarters with Lynn and a dorm room at school. I added a minor in secondary science education and even did my student teaching at Habersham Central since that allowed me to live at home with Mom and Dad. Lynn returned to his job with the GFC in the Statesboro office in March, and in September 1972 we welcomed our first child, Laura Elizabeth Hooven. Over the years we have moved with the commission and lived in Millen, Newnan (that we loved and hated to leave), and finally, Macon that is truly now home. Our son, James Buckelew Hooven, II, named for Lynn's dad, was born in Newnan in 1975. Macon(1979-present) was our final destination because it is the state headquarters of the Commission so Lynn was allowed to be promoted several times without a change in location. By the time both children were in school, I decided I was ready to begin my career outside the home, For six years, I was a substitute teacher for Bibb County, and by the fall of 1986 both Laura and James were attending Tattnall Square Academy, a private college-prep Christian school (grades pre-k through 12th). I was offered a position with TSA teaching math the first year (like Mrs. Bates) and then science (like Mrs. Barron, Mr. Cash, and Mr. Chandelor); that sealed the next 27 years of my career. I have taught everything from pre-algebra to life science, earth science, biology, and environmental science. These years were wonderful because until the kids both graduated we went to school together every day, my fellow teachers became some of my very best friends, and we were all totally involved as a family in every aspect of the school. I retired in May 2013 only because Lynn and I wanted to spend time with our most precious blessings--the four grandchildren. Lynn (lucky state employee) had retired with full benefits on October 31, 2001, since they counted his time in the military and any unused sick days ...Expand for more
or annual leave. Our most proud accomplishments are our two children and four grandchildren. Both Laura and James followed in Mom and Dad's footprints and graduated from UGA. Laura graduated in June 1994 with a degree in fashion merchandising and marketing. She was even able to study abroad in England and tour most of Europe thanks to a program offered by UGA. She has worked with Parisian's, W H Smith, & Macy's in Atlanta, then Ebags in Denver, CO, and QVC in Philadelphia. She married Marc Waetjen from Hamburg, Germany in 2007 in Vail, Colorado. He was working for a German-owned company outside of Philadelphia. They make their home in Wyomissing, PA and have blessed us with Carsten(7) and Katrin (5). Last year, Laura gave up her corporate job to have more time at home with the children and work part-time for a non-profit, Girls on the Run. Marc travels all over North America and Europe for his job in the logistics of shipping products to and from Europe. She and Marc are both very involved in their community and their church. James completed his degree in horticulture from UGA in December 1998. In January he packed up and headed west to enjoy many of his passions for the outdoors. He spent time in Whitefish, MT skiing, hiking, camping, and white water kayaking for about 1 1/2 years. He said between working on the ski slopes that provided free ski passes, waiting tables at a resort that provided free meals and a little money, and living and working at a youth hostel that provide a place to sleep what else did he need! In 2000, he decided it was time to join the real world and moved to Boulder, Colorado, to live with some friends from college and begin to work at a nursery and landscape design company. It did not take many years for him to realize he was ready to step out on his own, and he formed his own company Northlights Landscape & Design that began to grow rapidly. With the change in the economy and the near-collapse of the housing industry, very few people were undertaking the types of projects that his business had been providing--enhanced lighting, outdoor kitchens, water features and irrigation systems, and new installation of landscape and hardscape. By this time he had married and had his first child. He quickly retooled his business, now NorthernLights Exterior, LLC, and his crews to complete roofing, gutters, siding, windows, painting--in other words, anything for the home's exterior. With all the storms in that area and housing picking up again, his business continues to grow by leaps and bounds. While in Boulder, James met a great young woman, Kristen Cherry from of all places, Atlanta, Ga. They were married in Virgin Gorda in July 2005. Their marriage has been blessed with the birth of Hannah Lynn Hooven (8) and Drake Buckelew Hooven (5). Last year Kristen was able to leave the industry in which she had worked for 13 years (and traveled a lot) and help out as office manager of their business and spend much more time at home with the children. They live now in Fort Lupton, Colorado between Denver and Fort Collins with a wonderful view of the Rockies! With my dad dying in 1993 from cancer and moving Mother to Macon in 2002, we have lost our Cornelia connection except for a very few people. I moved Mother to Macon to a Senior Community that provided everything from independent living to assisted living, memory care and nursing home facilities because she was beginning to show early signs of Alzheimer's. It was hard for her to leave the town she had lived in for 50 + years, but we had almost 10 wonderful years to spend lots of time together that would not have been possible with her living 3+ hours away. My last trip to Cornelia was in early January 2012 when we laid Mother to rest beside Daddy at Memorial Gardens. Lynn continues to works as a consultant forester, and I returned to substituting teaching, but only at Tattnall. We enjoy traveling anywhere and visiting our two little families as often as possible. As we say, Delta Airline loves us. We will, God willing, celebrate our 47th wedding anniversary in June, and I look forward to reconnecting with all of you at the class reunion in October. Sorry, this was so long, but it takes a while to recap 50 great years!
